Who are we? – Part IV: Jaana Mäkelä

1.) Name, title, how long have you worked at Spatineo?Jaana Mäkelä
Jaana Mäkelä, Service Director, I have worked at Spatineo since February 2014.

2.) What do you do at Spatineo in practice? Tell us about your typical work day!
I’m responsible for the sales of Spatineo’s products in Finland and in Sweden. My job is also the development of Spatineo Roadmap and consulting work related to the GIS maturity assessment in the customer organisations.

In a typical working day, I meet customers with whom we discuss and plan how our products could help them to develop their processes and services. Because of my long career in the field of spatial data and Geo-ICT, I have known many of the customers for years and understand the challenges related to their businesses. During my working day, I also write tenders and reports and meet our partners.

3.) What is the best thing about your work?
It’s great to work in an international company that has good possibilities to grow and succeed in global markets. And your own actions have a real impact on the success. My colleagues are young, innovative and forward looking and we have a strong spirit of happening in our actions. It’s always great to meet customers, because every time you learn more about their businesses.

The results of my research at Aalto University have been developed further as a product, Spatineo Roadmap, and I can continue with the development of the maturity of the utilisation of spatial data in our customer organisations. Also this makes my job inspiring and versatile.

4.) If you are a tourist in a foreign city, which map service do you use? Why?
I use Google Maps because the service often works well in those cities in which I stay as a tourist. If I travel with my own car, I use the integrated navigation service of Volkswagen. When I’m not in a hurry and I can just walk around in the city, I might not use a map at all. Sometimes it is just relaxing when you don’t know where you are – this is probably based on the InterRail trips in my youth.
